Debate at the McGill University Model UN Conference
Ten cadets of the United States Military Academy Model United Nations team traveled to Montreal, Quebec to participate in McGill University Model United Nations Conference (McMUN) hosted by McGill University. McMUN presented the West Point MUN team with the opportunity to develop public speaking skills, gain knowledge of international affairs, and represent USMA and the US Army in a professional and positive way to an international student audience. Schools in attendance included Georgetown University, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Florida International University, and American University, among many others. Cadets participated in many interesting debate topics including but not limited to international cooperation to combat Alzheimer's Disease in WHO, economic reconstruction and microfinancing in ECOFIN, efforts to combat illicit arms trafficking across nation-states in UNGA Special Assembly, and international legal arbitration between Russia and the United States in the ICJ.
The conference ended with multiple cadets earning individual awards, with the entire team performing well and displaying exceptional speaking skills, negotiation, and cooperative problem solving with over 1,600 other students from domestic and international universities. The following cadets were individually recognized for their outstanding performances: John Govern '19, Jason Filios '22, Katarina Christianson '21 and Jake Stoffel '19. The following cadets were also integral to the team's success: Joel Macklin '19, Dana Cody '20, George Pavlakis '21, Noah Kim '22, Ben Snyder '21, Hunter Arnold '21, Amanda Horsey '19, Cam Hay '21 and Jack Chu '19.
