Summer Immersion Program in UzbekistanThis summer, one Russian-studying cadet and four Persian-studying cadets participated in a three-week immersion program in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. They were accompanied by DR Amir Irani-Tehrani, Persian program director. Following a two-week intensive language program through Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages, during which time they stayed with Uzbek host families, cadets visited the historic cities of Bukhara, Khiva, and Tashkent, and gained an extensive knowledge of Central Asian culture and history, before heading back home. The highlights of the program included visiting an ancient water-mill powered mulberry tree paper factory, participating in the day-one events of a seven-day Uzbek wedding, celebrating an Uzbek birthday, visiting the purported burial site of the Old Testament prophet, Daniel, visiting the oldest Jewish community in Central Asia, visiting a Shiite mosque, lots of museums and historical sites, not to mention a special tour of the archeological site of “Afrasiob,” the ancient site of the city of Samarkand.
