McMahan, Kutz Ready for Olympic Trials
Lauren McMahan and Kaitlyn Kutz of the Army West Point rifle team will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials, Part 2 Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., from February 7-9. The duo competed in the Winter Airgun Championships from December 6-8, which also paired as the first part of the Olympic trials.
The combined total scores from part one and part two will determine who represents the United States in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
McMahan currently sits in 13th place entering the match after posting a combined score of 1241.7 in December. Additionally, the Sarasota, Fla., native finished eighth in the Winter Airgun Championship in the junior category, which is shooters 21 and under.
"Lauren is going into the final selection match for the Olympic team in a good position in the women's air rifle event," Army head rifle coach Web Wright said. "There's a very real chance that she could make this team with the great performance that she is capable of."
Kutz ranks 37th going into this weekend, following a combined mark of 1231.6.
"Kaitlyn has been shooting strong lately, too," Wright said about his junior captain. "Over the past couple of months, she is consistently our best air rifle shooter and has the potential to make it through the qualification round and into the final eight elimination phase of the selection match."
