Swimming & Diving Sets Multiple New Records in Star Meet
Several program records, pool records and personal bests highlighted the Army West Point Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams' performances in the annual Star Meet with Navy, which is part of the Star Series presented by USAA. The meet also doubled as the Patriot League Challenge.
“The energy and the excitement and the way that the team fought from the very first event to end of the meet was phenomenal,” Army head coach Brandt Nigro said. “We won races that going into the meet, we didn't know if we had a shot to win. When you can do that against your biggest rival at the end of a long, trying season it speaks volumes not only about the people that are on this team, but also the direction that this program is headed and what we're going to accomplish in the very near future.” Navy won the meet on the men's side 198-102 and claimed it on the women's side with a score of 220-77.
Firstie captain Rebecca Morel set a person record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.62, which ranks fourth in school history. She finished .21 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The Mendham, N.J., native also set a new personal record in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:16.32, which was good for a second-place finish and ranks fourth in school history. Along with Lauren Carag, Angela Huang and Madison Berg, Morel was part of the 200-yard medley relay team, which claimed first with a new program record time of 1:40.35.
Berg lowered her program record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.72, which was good for second place. The Lake Elmo, Minn., native was the final leg of Army's 200-yard medley relay and posted a split of 22.14 in the 50-yard freestyle portion. Had she posted that mark in the 50-yard freestyle event, her time would have shattered the Patriot League record by .22 seconds.
Firstie Jane Bryce posted new personal best times in the 50-yard freestyle (23.81) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.54). Her 51.9 split in the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay was also a personal best 100-yard freestyle time. Read more.
